'One Cornwall' - The Planned Unitary Authority
Dear Editor,
The attempts to set up the Unitary Authority in Cornwall in place of the tried and tested means of democratic government , is dangerous.
It is dangerous because has bypassed democracy and refused The People of the County of Cornwall their rightful “say”.
The result is chaos, and hundreds of right arms not knowing what the other hundred left arms are doing.
It is a clear recipe for disaster.
I wonder if Sir Alan Sugar would set up a nation-wide company in the same way?
No government has ever been elected in the UK, to change the whole face of our national government without the permission of The People.
And what is happening all over Britain today, with the imposition of unitary authorities, is exactly that. It is not a change in the style of governance, which we have had before. This is an entirely different kiddie, because it does not involve democracy at any stage and all opposition is being swept unceremoniously aside.
There is no reason why the concept of unitary authorities should not be introduced, where the People have expressed a wish for it, or having been honestly informed, have agreed to it.
But that is not what is happening in Cornwall, if it were not so, we would be having local elections in Penwith this year.
The whole thing is pure NuLabour Jackboot politics, ably assisted by the Liberal Democrats whom we now see desperately trying to distance themselves from Nulabour at a national level, although they are deeply involved in Cornwall.
With the joining at the hip, of the two “main” parties in Britain, led by Major and Blair ,it was then determined that there would be no room for opposition.
And that is exactly what we are seeing today.
The people of Britain are intelligent, educated people, especially the young ones, and it is my belief that many will see through this whole sad debacle eventually, although perhaps not in time to halt this latest madness in our County.
We already know that our Council Taxes are rising to a point where the elderly and the many low paid already cannot pay them.
To whom will we turn, when we find that this already unsustainable amount is doubling and trebling.
The answer is that there will be no one who will have the power to do anything about it.
We have already seen grannies and grandpas flung into prison in the South West because they have made a stand against this iniquitous tax.
What, I wonder, are we about to witness as the future unfolds?
It is indeed time for us to take back the governance of our County and our Country to ourselves.
