Cancer Care Moved Out Of Cornwall
With many in Cornwall angry that views are being ignored or not even sought before major local decisions are made, UK Independence Party Truro and Falmouth Candidate Glen Corcoran has reacted with disbelief to the news that services for cancer sufferers are to be moved out of Cornwall.
“This is an outrage – within days of an appalling budget that penalises Cornwall for having to rely on road transport, news comes out that the decision has been made to move cancer treatment to Derriford in Plymouth or even Exeter” notes Corcoran.
“Not only does this mean patients being needlessly transported over many miles of already busy roads, it does mean family and friends in some cases will just not be able to afford the journey to visit sick and needy people.
In an average car the fuel alone to Exeter is likely to cost over £30 per trip”
The decision to move operations for head and neck, upper gastro intestinal and complex gynaecological cancers to hospitals in Plymouth and Exeter was made by a Committee for ‘Adult Social Care Overview and Scrutiny’ in November. Glen Corcoran commented “that had the public been made aware of this, there would have been widespread condemnation – I urge everyone who can to attend the next meeting of this committee on March 25th, to show their support for keeping these services in Cornwall. If enough people turn up to express their view, then they cannot be ignored.”
“It is the view of UKIP, me and not surprisingly, many people in Cornwall that pooling resources in some distant location does not serve us better regardless of the argued economies of scale”
