NIGEL FARAGE SPEAKS TO WEST CORNWALL
It was with great delight, that UKIP St Ives, greeted NIGEL FARAGE their Party Leader, on his visit to Penzance on Thursday 25th April, where he visited the Newlyn Fishermen and toured the area on foot, to hear the problems and comments of local people.
In the evening, he appeared at the Meeting, held for him by the local Committee at the LUGGER INN, on the Promenade, where the landlord and his wife were the kindest of hosts.
It was gratifying to see the meeting room full, with more people standing.
The Chairman was Mr Malcolm Wood, who is responsible for UKIP in the South West, who began the meeting by introducing the Guest Speaker, Mr John Moran, Chairman from Kingston upon Thames, who brought a fresh insight into this, the far reaches of Cornwall, from the other side of the country.
Not only was his speech informative but he also amused the audience with some stories of his UKIP experiences at home and in the EU which struck a chord with the audience.
We were then lucky enough to have two of the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates from West Cornwall Constituencies attending.
They were Mr Mick Faulkner, for St Ives and the Isles of Scilly and Mr Glen Corcoran, for the new branch of Truro and Falmouth, both of whom gave us short talks on how they see that the UKIP could tackle the particular problems which affect us in this part of Cornwall.
Last, but very far from least, was our LEADER, Mr Nigel Farage who had started his day the night before, by catching the “sleeper” from London to Penzance, from whence, on arrival at 8.30 a.m., he proceeded straight to his series of meetings and interviews with the fishermen of Newlyn.
And so his long, hard day began and progressed until he met us at the Lugger Inn to join us in a succulent carvery dinner before going into the meeting itself.
Nigel is always a rousing speaker, and his obviously intimate knowledge of the EU and its parliament was an eye opener for many in the audience.
He also talked about the problems of the fishing industry in the UK and the UKIP Policy, which has just been launched to deal with this problem.
He spoke about housing and jobs and a host of the other things which plague the people in this, the poorest area in the UK, illustrating that he was aware and ready to form common sense policies to deal with them.
It was a very uplifting occasion for everyone involved and it was not surprising that he received a Standing Ovation at the end of his speech.
But that was not the end of the evening, because the speeches were followed by a totally genuine Question Time, when anyone in the audience of members and non-members could ask him, or any of the other panel members any questions that they wished.
There was no doubt that having someone on the panel from Surrey, on the other side of the country, only served to give an added dimension to the answers and much food for thought.
It was an experience which will act as a further incentive to us all, after all the long time we have laboured on against all the odds to work ever onwards and upwards towards the European Election and the General Election both of which are only just over the hill in 2009/2010.
When Nigel Farage, Our Leader, finally left the hall to catch his “sleeper” back to London, he was no doubt a tired man, but it had been a good and profitable day, and a good and profitable evening and we will hope to welcome him back to Cornwall again in the future, when we will be fighting hard to put our PPC’s into the House of Commons on our behalf of the people of Cornwall.
