UK Independence Party – St Ives and the Isles of Scilly

Tess Nash - Chairman - Posting Local Referendum Results to Gordon Brown The Constituency Party Branch of St Ives and the Isles of Scilly, is unique in that it cannot be termed either “rural”, nor yet “urban”, nor yet entirely “maritime”.

It contains numerous villages, farms and smallholdings, as well as a significant number of towns. In addition, with the sea all around, it has a strong maritime history and tradition in fishing and boat-building, with the addition of Falmouth boasting busy docks regularly hosting ocean liners as well as merchant traffic.
So there is a great deal more to the West Cornwall Constituency of St Ives and the Isles of Scilly than “tourism”, although it has formed a large part of the region’s economy for many years.

Apart from Culdrose Airfield, near Helston, and several other smaller M.O.D. installations, Tourism is now the main source of employment. This creates a certain amount of “seasonal poverty” which when linked with the general trend towards exceptionally low wages throughout the Constituency, gives birth to problem after problem which should not be occurring in a modern Britain, one of the richest Economies in the World.

The struggling NHS, under-funded for years, and a serious lack of subsidised rented housing, are both signs of the persistent poverty thus created.

Recently, Cornwall received the dubious honour of a visit to the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust by the newly appointed “minister” for the South West “Region”, Ben Bradshaw. However, it was, perhaps, significant that Mr Bradshaw only visited the two most successful hospitals in the County, for which local people Marched to save from Closure only a short time ago, while totally ignoring the Royal Cornwall Hospital, which is the seat of the problems in hospital care in this County.

Had he done so, as we, in our family have had the misfortune through ill health to have to do over the past 18 months, he would have seen for himself, the manic management which is creating an impossible work place for our hard-pressed hospital doctors and nurses as they juggle beds and isolation rooms and diagnostic testing facilities and treatment schedules to comply with the diktats of “The Management” which sees fit to close a significant cancer ward in the midst of 1 in 3 people in the County being diagnosed with cancer every day.

Leafleting has been continuing all summer of 2007 and is still going forward in the opposite end of the Branch now, in November. This will continue week by week, as long as the volunteers will come out and as long as the weather permits.

So if you are willing to help, please phone JAMES WALLIS, who is our Leafleting Organiser, on 01736 785681.

Don’t let yourself be one of those who complains that “they” , or “the UKIP” “ought to do more”. We, the Committee, are only a tiny percentage of the membership of this Branch.

So COME ON OUT AND HELP US.
PLEASE.

Although we lost a lot of members to the Camborne/Redruth Branch at the time of the government Constituency Boundary Changes, the membership has now recovered again, and is, as we speak, increasing most pleasingly.

Perhaps that is something to do with our Motto – “Onward and Upwards” .

Flora Day in Helston

Flora Day in Helston this year, saw the local UKIP branch out in force with their Stall, manned by committee members John and Brenda Wing, Stuart Guppy, branch secretary and James Wallis, leafleting manager, with Tess Nash, St Ives Branch Chairman and Jeff Mager, Cornwall County Chairman, in supporting roles.

A good number of people stopped to talk and were all in agreement with the UKIP cause while the DVD “Remote Control” was handed out free of charge and was very well received.
Examination of the route afterwards, revealed very few leaflets thrown away, and no DVDs at all which was a very good sign.

It was felt that support for the UK Independence Party in the area is growing and firm, which was very encouraging.

It was only the change of weather to chill rain that drove everyone home prematurely.

Congratulations and thanks go to John and Brenda, Stuart and James who were there at the crack of dawn until the bitter end.
